Former ISI Chief Faiz Hamid Charged with Political Activities, Security Violations

Lieutenant General (Retd) Faiz Hamid has been formally charged with multiple offenses, including engaging in political activities and violating the Official Secrets Act, according to the military’s media wing, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR). The allegations also involve misuse of authority, improper use of government resources, and causing wrongful losses to individuals.

The charges against Hamid, who previously served as the chief of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), have raised concerns about state security and interests, the ISPR said in a statement issued on Tuesday.

The process of a field general court-martial (FGCM) under the Pakistan Army Act was initiated against Hamid on August 12. The ISPR stated that Hamid’s role in the May 9 riots and his alleged collaboration with political interests to foment unrest were under investigation.

The May 9 incidents refer to violent protests that erupted nationwide following the arrest of former Prime Minister and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan. Demonstrators attacked public and military installations, leading to arrests and trials under the Army Act.

The ISPR highlighted Hamid’s alleged involvement in activities “detrimental to the safety and interests of the state,” including “agitation and unrest” in collusion with political actors.

“Lt Gen Faiz Hamid (retd) is being afforded all legal rights as per the law,” the ISPR assured.

Brigadier (Retd) Rashid Wali, speaking to Geo News, called the charges against Hamid “serious.” He explained that the trial would be conducted in a military court, after which Hamid could appeal the verdict.

The case underscores the broader political and institutional tensions in Pakistan, particularly in the aftermath of the May 9 riots, where several PTI leaders, including Imran Khan, have faced legal action.
